You’re hiding in the dark. They are looking for you. Then, suddenly, someone turns on a spotlight, and the darkness is illuminated like a sunbeam! Terror grips you, as you realize that you’ve been exposed! No longer are you able to hide among the trees! So it was with Adam & Eve. They had sinned. They knew they had done wrong and felt guilty. Yet, they hoped they could cover-up the crime and hide from the One to whom they were accountable! Then God turned on the search light! All their feeble attempts, all their conniving and planning, came to not!
So to, are people today. Folks sin, and then try to cover-up. They try to justify themselves. They try to make up with good the evil they have done. Yet, when God turns on the search light, all self-effort is useless, and the terribleness of sin is exposed! We often make the error of comparing ourselves to others. “Oh, I’m not as bad as them! I haven’t done what they did.” And we sense the condescending tone in the voice! This is quickly followed by an air of superiority! “Well, I do this, and I do this, and I do all this good!” This my friends, is pride speaking. Pride is always introspective.
The truth be told, we need to have a righteousness that is equal to that of God’s righteousness. The Word of God says to, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (James 2:8) I wonder, have you? Have you taken care of your neighbor’s yard? Have you bought them a new car? Have you worked to put food on their table? Have you given them money for a vacation? Have you paid for their schooling? Now, what about your thoughts? Have you ever lusted after another sexually of whom you have no biblical right? Have you ever coveted, wanted, what is not yours? Ever had thoughts about getting even? What about your mouth? Ever told a lie? Ever said a cutting word? You see, when God throws the search light on your heart, it ain’t so pretty, is it? The fig leaves of religion, don’t cover so well, do they? Our so-called righteousness, don’t help much, does it? All our good deeds won’t avail, will they? For it is written, “Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God.” (~Romans 3:19)
So, what is the legal verdict, for the guilty sinner? “For the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 6:23) Yes, ultimately, the sinner is sitting on death-row, awaiting execution – the Lake of Fire for eternity. This is nothing to fool around with. It is not something to joke about, as did those who listened to Lot, as he warned his relatives in Sodom and Gomorrah! For it is written, “The LORD is about to destroy it.” But the young men thought he was only joking.” (~Genesis 19:14)
Yes, God’s judgement to come is all too real! As is written in the holy Word of God, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.” (2 Peter 3:10)
Look, there is only but one answer for you, you need to realize and believe that Jesus is the one who came to be your own Saviour! He took the penalty of death for all your sin. He, as a gift, gives you His righteousness upon believing in Him, as the one that is able to save you completely. Do you see what Jesus has done for you? Do you see why He died upon the cross? Do you see that the grace of God is your only hope? That there is nothing that you are able to do that makes yourself acceptable to God?
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ…for by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Ephesians 2:4-9)
Have you come to realize that there is not-a-thing you can do to make yourself acceptable enough to God? That you can never be as holy as He? It’s vital you do. We need to come to God in all the filth of our sin, and let Him wash us from all that filth, and place the righteous, spotless, garments of Christ Himself upon us! It is the one and only way, we can ever be acceptable to our holy God! If there be, even one iota that depends on self to get us into God’s holy Heaven, not even one human can meet this impossible standard of holiness! Only, I say, only by the grace of God, will anyone enter the glories of Heaven! Yes, God is waiting for you to come home. Will you come today? Right now? “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13) It is the promise God makes to you! He can make that promise, because what Jesus the Saviour has done to save you, is wholly adequate!
